Who is behind IKEA mattresses

IKEA is the Swedish home furnishings retailer founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad (Wikipedia). It designs its own mattresses and names them after Scandinavian places, which is why shoppers search for Valevåg or Ånneland rather than a model number. In the US they are sold in IKEA stores and on IKEA.com, nowhere else.

What the US range looks like

Almost every adult mattress IKEA sells in the US is roll-packed, so you can carry it home from the store, and most come in several firmness versions under the same name. The main lines split into pocket spring, hybrid and all-foam models. The four we cover in detail:

Several names that still get searched a lot are gone from the US site. Morgedal, the foam mattress many people remember, now redirects to the mattress category, and Haugesund and Haugsvar are no longer listed either. Underlig, another popular search, is a mattress for IKEA’s junior bed, not a full-size model.

Trial, warranty and returns

IKEA lets you try a mattress at home for 90 days, but the deal is an exchange: if it does not suit you, you swap it for another IKEA mattress rather than getting your money back (IKEA product page). The current mattresses carry a 10-year limited warranty, with the terms set out in IKEA’s mattress warranty booklet. IKEA also says its US mattresses contain no fiberglass; the fire barrier is a viscose and polyester fiber blend. Note that most of these mattresses are meant for a slatted base, so check your bed frame before you buy.
