“For a child's room or a guest bed, a medium-firm twin suits the widest range of sleepers. An adult who sleeps on a twin every night gets more from a thicker comfort layer than from any extra feature.”
Twin, Twin XL or Full
A standard twin measures 38 x 75 inches (97 x 191 cm). That leaves room to spare for children, most teens and the average American adult, whose height the CDC puts at 68.9 inches for men and 63.5 inches for women (CDC, 2021-2023). Once a sleeper reaches about six feet, feet start to hang off a 75-inch bed. A Twin XL adds 5 inches of length at the same width, and many college dorm beds take that size, so check the dorm’s spec before you buy for a student.
If the problem is width rather than length, a Full is 16 inches wider (54 x 75 in) and the better buy for one adult who likes to spread out. Our best full mattresses ranking covers that size.
Firmness for kids, teens and guests
Lighter sleepers press less into a mattress, so a twin for a child or a teenager can be firmer than what an adult would choose for themselves. Medium-firm is the best all-round feel for a guest room, because it keeps back and stomach sleepers level and still gives a side sleeper some cushioning for a few nights. If you have no idea who will use the bed, a flippable mattress with a softer and a firmer side hedges the bet. An adult side sleeper who uses a twin every night should look for a thicker comfort layer, such as a pillow top over zoned coils.
Height and the bed frame
Twins are the usual size for bunk beds, daybeds and trundles, and those frames limit how thick the mattress can be. The CPSC requires bunk bed guardrails to reach at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress, and every bunk bed must be labeled with the mattress size and thickness it is designed for. Read that label before you order. The mattresses we rank run from 9.25 to 14.5 inches, and some top bunks are labeled for a thinner mattress than any of them, so on a top bunk the label decides, not our ranking. A daybed used as a sofa needs firm edges more than height.
What a twin costs, and what the Twin XL adds
The twin is the cheapest size in almost every range, but the saving over a Twin XL varies a lot from brand to brand. The Nectar Classic Hybrid shows the extreme, at $349 in Twin against $749 in Twin XL. The table lists the brands’ current prices before sales tax, checked in October 2026.
