Tuft & Needle Original reviewed

The T&N Original is the mattress that put Tuft & Needle on the map, now in a newer version. It is an all-foam bed 12 in (30 cm) tall with three layers: T&N Adaptive foam on top, a support foam that cushions pressure points and a sturdy base foam, all under a cooling cover.

T&N calls the Original the firmest mattress in its collection. We place it around 7 out of 10, and the brand recommends it for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers usually want more give at the shoulder and will be more comfortable on the Mint.

The Adaptive foam is the interesting part. T&N says it is more responsive than standard memory foam, so you do not feel stuck, and that gel and graphite in the foam help it sleep up to 5 degrees cooler. In practice it moves back faster than classic memory foam and avoids the deep hug.

A Queen costs $699, which is low for a branded, USA-made foam mattress with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. It ships free in a box, and T&N states it is CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold certified.
