Comparison

Best Twin Mattresses

We compared twin size mattresses for kids' rooms, guest rooms and adults who sleep alone, on length, firmness, height and the twin's own price. A twin often goes on a bunk bed, daybed or trundle, so its height matters as much as its feel, and the right firmness depends on whether a child, a guest or an adult sleeps on it. Our ranking, reviews and comparison table show which twin suits which sleeper.

Best Twin Mattresses: every pick reviewed

Nectar Classic Hybrid
Nectar Classic HybridNectar Classic HybridNectar Classic Hybrid
Best overall

Nectar Classic Hybrid

The Nectar Classic Hybrid is the twin we would put in most kids' rooms and guest rooms. Eight inches of pocketed coils under a thin layer of memory foam give the medium-firm, even support that lighter sleepers need, and the coils let it sleep cooler than an all-foam bed.

At $349 in Twin it is one of the cheapest hybrid mattresses from a major brand, which leaves room in the budget for sheets and a protector.

Pros
  • Medium-firm support suits kids, teens and most guests
  • Easy to change position on
  • Year-long trial
Cons
  • Springy coil feel, less hug than memory foam

Saatva Classic
Saatva ClassicSaatva ClassicSaatva Classic
Best premium pick

Saatva Classic

For an adult who sleeps alone in a twin, the Saatva Classic is the most complete mattress we rank. It is a coil-on-coil innerspring with a Euro pillow top and a lumbar zone, sold in three firmness levels and two heights, so you order the exact feel rather than guess.

It ranks second only because its twin costs $1,449, several times our top pick, a premium that pays off for nightly adult use rather than for an occasional sleeper. Free white glove delivery and setup soften that price, though a return within the 365-night trial costs a $99 processing fee.

Pros
  • Choice of plush soft, luxury firm or firm
  • Lumbar zone keeps the lower back level
Cons
  • Made to order, so delivery takes longer
  • Taller 14.5 in version not for adjustable bases

Best flippable option

Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Buying for a guest room where you never know who will sleep? The Layla Memory Foam has a softer side and a firmer side, so you flip it for the visitor, or for a teen who now wants it softer.

Its twin costs $649, well below the premium picks for a mattress that covers two firmness needs.

Pros
  • Soft side and firm side in one mattress
  • Zip-off cover
  • Lifetime warranty at a mid-range price
Cons
  • Soft side too soft for heavier stomach sleepers
  • Edges sink when used as a daybed seat
  • Little bounce, so changing position takes effort

Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix Midnight LuxeHelix Midnight LuxeHelix Midnight Luxe
Best for side sleepers

Helix Midnight Luxe

Of all the twins we compared, the Helix Midnight Luxe is the one an adult side sleeper will find most comfortable. A pillow top and 4 lb memory foam cushion shoulders and hips, while zoned coils stay firmer under the lower back so the middle does not sag.

At $1,492.50 it is the most expensive twin we rank, worth it for an adult who sleeps on a twin every night, while occasional sleepers are well served by the cheaper picks above. At 13.5 inches it belongs on a standard frame, not a bunk.

Pros
  • Pillow top cushions shoulders and hips
  • Zoned coils firmer under the lower back
  • Breathable TENCEL cover
Cons
  • Too expensive for occasional use
  • Not firm enough for stomach sleepers

The Purple Mattress
The Purple MattressThe Purple MattressThe Purple Mattress
Best cooling option

The Purple Mattress

Hot sleepers, teenagers included, will like The Purple Mattress, whose 2-inch GelFlex Grid lets air move through the surface and relieves pressure without the slow sinking of memory foam.

At 9.25 inches it is the slimmest pick here, but check your bunk's label before using it on a top bunk, as our buying guide explains under height. Heavier adults will find it thin. The twin costs $1,099 with a 100-night trial.

Pros
  • Grid relieves pressure without sinking
  • Sleeps cooler than most foam beds
Cons
  • Grid feel takes some getting used to
  • Cover is spot clean only
  • 21 nights required before a return

Awara Classic Hybrid

Best natural option

Awara Classic Hybrid

Parents who want natural materials in a child's room should start with the Awara Classic Hybrid, built from 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic latex and a New Zealand wool quilt over pocketed coils instead of memory foam.

Latex pushes back more than memory foam, so a restless child or teen turns over easily, and the wool and coils keep heat moving. The twin costs $599, backed by a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty.

Pros
  • Organic latex and wool comfort layers
  • Sturdy edges for sitting
Cons
  • Only one firmness, medium-firm
  • Contains wool, so not for vegans

Tuft & Needle Original
Tuft & Needle OriginalTuft & Needle OriginalTuft & Needle Original
Best for stomach sleepers

Tuft & Needle Original

Stomach sleepers, and teens who sleep on their front, need a surface that keeps the hips from dipping. The Tuft & Needle Original is one of the firmest picks here, with a responsive gel and graphite foam that keeps you on top rather than in a hollow.

At $399 in Twin, this US-made 12-inch foam bed is fairly priced for a known brand, though its 10-year warranty is shorter than on most picks here.

Pros
  • Firm, flat support keeps hips level
  • Fiberglass-free build
Cons
  • Too firm for most side sleepers
  • Simple three-layer build, no coils or zoning

Best budget pick

Siena Signature 10″ Memory Foam

When the twin is for a spare room or a sleepover bed, the Siena Signature 10″ does the job for very little. Its twin costs $199, the lowest price on this page, and the medium-firm memory foam suits most guests for a few nights.

The 2-inch comfort layer is thin for an adult side sleeper every night, so keep it for occasional use, or browse our best cheap mattresses for sturdier low-cost picks.

Pros
  • 180-night trial, long for the price
  • Cheapest Twin XL on this page too
Cons
  • Thin comfort layer for nightly adult use
  • All-foam build can sleep warm

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“For a child's room or a guest bed, a medium-firm twin suits the widest range of sleepers. An adult who sleeps on a twin every night gets more from a thicker comfort layer than from any extra feature.”

Twin, Twin XL or Full

A standard twin measures 38 x 75 inches (97 x 191 cm). That leaves room to spare for children, most teens and the average American adult, whose height the CDC puts at 68.9 inches for men and 63.5 inches for women (CDC, 2021-2023). Once a sleeper reaches about six feet, feet start to hang off a 75-inch bed. A Twin XL adds 5 inches of length at the same width, and many college dorm beds take that size, so check the dorm’s spec before you buy for a student.

If the problem is width rather than length, a Full is 16 inches wider (54 x 75 in) and the better buy for one adult who likes to spread out. Our best full mattresses ranking covers that size.

Firmness for kids, teens and guests

Lighter sleepers press less into a mattress, so a twin for a child or a teenager can be firmer than what an adult would choose for themselves. Medium-firm is the best all-round feel for a guest room, because it keeps back and stomach sleepers level and still gives a side sleeper some cushioning for a few nights. If you have no idea who will use the bed, a flippable mattress with a softer and a firmer side hedges the bet. An adult side sleeper who uses a twin every night should look for a thicker comfort layer, such as a pillow top over zoned coils.

Height and the bed frame

Twins are the usual size for bunk beds, daybeds and trundles, and those frames limit how thick the mattress can be. The CPSC requires bunk bed guardrails to reach at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress, and every bunk bed must be labeled with the mattress size and thickness it is designed for. Read that label before you order. The mattresses we rank run from 9.25 to 14.5 inches, and some top bunks are labeled for a thinner mattress than any of them, so on a top bunk the label decides, not our ranking. A daybed used as a sofa needs firm edges more than height.

What a twin costs, and what the Twin XL adds

The twin is the cheapest size in almost every range, but the saving over a Twin XL varies a lot from brand to brand. The Nectar Classic Hybrid shows the extreme, at $349 in Twin against $749 in Twin XL. The table lists the brands’ current prices before sales tax, checked in October 2026.

Mattress Type and feel Height (in) Twin Twin XL
Nectar Classic Hybrid Hybrid, medium-firm 12 $349 $749
Saatva Classic Innerspring, three firmness options 11.5 or 14.5 $1,449 $1,584

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress on this page is sold in a standard Twin (38 x 75 in) by the brand’s own US store, and we checked the twin price and stock there in October 2026. A twin rarely goes in the main bedroom, so we weighted our criteria toward the people who actually sleep on one.

  • The price of the Twin itself. We compare the twin price, not the starting price of the range, and how much the brand charges to step up to a Twin XL. On a size bought mostly for growing or occasional sleepers, every extra dollar has to buy something.
  • Support for lighter and growing bodies. Medium-firm and firm feels score higher here, because children, teens and lighter adults sink less and need an even surface more than deep cushioning.
  • Height. We list each mattress’s profile in inches, since twins often go on bunk beds, daybeds and trundles where a tall pillow top can be a fit or safety problem.
  • Trial and warranty. A refundable trial matters more when you buy for someone else, so we read the trial length, any minimum-nights rule and return fees.

Comfort, support, temperature and value are scored the same way across our whole mattress catalog, and the twin ranking adds the weighting above. That is why a higher-scoring mattress can rank below a cheaper one when its twin costs much more.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which twin mattress should I buy?

For most people who sleep on a twin, the Nectar Classic Hybrid is the best all-round choice, because its medium-firm coil support suits lighter sleepers and the occasional adult. An adult side sleeper should go plusher with the Helix Midnight Luxe, and a spare room on a tight budget is well served by the Siena Signature 10″.

What are the dimensions of a twin mattress?

A standard US twin mattress is 38 inches wide and 75 inches long (97 x 191 cm). Thickness is not standardized and varies by model.

Is a single mattress the same as a twin?

Yes, in the US "single" and "twin" are two names for the same 38 x 75-inch mattress.

Can an adult sleep on a twin mattress?

Yes, an adult under about six feet fits the twin's 75-inch length, and 38 inches of width is enough for one sleeper who does not sprawl. Taller adults should buy a Twin XL, which is 80 inches long. Adults who use the bed every night also benefit from a thicker comfort layer than a kids' twin needs.

What is the difference between a twin and a full mattress?

A full mattress is 54 x 75 inches, the same length as a twin but wider. It suits one adult who wants room to move, while a twin fits narrow rooms, bunk beds and daybeds.

How much does a twin mattress cost?

The twins we rank cost from $199 for the Siena Signature 10″ to $1,492.50 for the Helix Midnight Luxe, before sales tax. Paying more mostly buys a thicker comfort layer and zoned or pillow-top support.
