The CloudNine is SoundAsleep’s answer to the most common air bed complaint: waking up on a mattress that has gone soft. Besides the main pump that fills and empties it, there is a second smart pump that monitors the air pressure in the background and adds air when it drops.

The rest of the build follows the Dream Series: ComfortCoil air coils with I-beam support inside, a flocked top and a SureGrip bottom that keeps it from sliding. The Queen stands 19 inches (48 cm) high and measures 80 by 60 inches. Once you have set the firmness you like, the smart pump holds it, which makes a real difference for a guest who stays a week.

SoundAsleep’s sizes are its own: the Twin is 73 by 38 inches, the Twin XL 80 by 40, the Full 75 by 54 and the King 82 by 70. The Twin and Twin XL are 18 inches tall.

On soundasleepproducts.com the Queen lists at $224.95 and the Twin at $174.95, shown as sale prices under higher struck prices; the Queen and King were sold out at our check. Returns are accepted for 30 days at your own shipping cost, and a 1-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Pay for the CloudNine when the air bed has to work for more than a night or two: the pressure-holding pump is the feature that makes it feel like a bed rather than a camping mat. For a single night, the Dream Series is the better value.”
