The Serta Classic is the least expensive mattress on serta.com. It uses an 800-density system of individually wrapped coils with three zones that add support under the lower back and hips, topped with PillowSoft Aire foam and a soft, breathable cover.

Three feels are offered: the Dorian firm, the Alden medium we describe here and a plush euro top. The medium sits around 5 out of 10 and works for back sleepers and lighter side sleepers. Stomach sleepers should take the firm, which Serta recommends for that position.

With thin comfort layers, the Classic feels like a straightforward innerspring. It sleeps cool thanks to the open coil base, but it lacks the zoned comfort layers and wool of the Perfect Sleeper, so pressure relief for heavier side sleepers is limited.

The medium costs $399 for a Queen, with the firm and euro top slightly dearer. For that price you still get free shipping and returns, the 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty, and Serta states it is made in the USA with global components.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Classic is a sound choice when the budget is tight or the bed is not used every night. For your main bedroom, the extra spent on a Perfect Sleeper buys noticeably better comfort.”
