The Saatva Solaire is an adjustable-firmness air mattress, Saatva’s answer to the Sleep Number beds. A remote changes the air chambers across 50 settings, and from Queen up each side of the bed has its own chamber, so two sleepers can pick different firmness levels.

It is 13 in (33 cm) tall. Under a Euro pillow top and a cover made with organic cotton sit a layer of 5-zone natural latex and a layer of gel-infused memory foam, then the air chambers inside a reinforced enclosure with the pump built in. The latex and foam layers can be flipped, latex up for a more responsive feel or foam up for a closer hug.

Saatva rates the Solaire for up to 800 lb per sleeper, the highest figure in its range. That and the split firmness make it a strong fit for couples whose weights or preferences are far apart, and for anyone whose ideal firmness changes with back trouble or an adjustable base.

A Queen costs $4,789, the most in the Saatva line-up. It needs a power outlet near the bed, there is no Twin size, and an adjustable base bought with it cannot be returned.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Solaire is worth its price if you and your partner never agree on firmness, or if your own needs change from month to month. It costs far more than a Classic, so buy it for the adjustability, not for the pillow top. If one fixed firmness suits you, the Classic or Latex Hybrid comes with the same delivery and warranty for much less.”
