The Avocado Green Mattress is the brand’s flagship and the model most shoppers mean when they search for an organic hybrid. In our test we looked at its construction, certifications, prices for every size and the fine print of the trial. It is built around up to 1,379 pocketed coils made from recycled steel and arranged in seven zones, with organic Dunlop latex on top, organic wool as the fire barrier and an organic cotton cover. There is no polyurethane foam, no fiberglass and no chemical flame retardant inside.

You choose between three feels. Firm (11.5 in) has 2 inches of latex plus coconut fiber pads, Medium (11 in) has 3 inches of latex, and the Plush pillow-top (13 in) has 5 inches. We rate the Medium version here as a true medium, around 6 on a 10-point scale: latex pushes back faster than memory foam, so you sleep on the mattress rather than in it. Back sleepers and combination sleepers get the most from it; side sleepers under about 130 lb may find the Medium too firm at the shoulder and should look at the pillow-top.

Temperature is a strong point. Coils leave room for air to move, and wool and cotton handle moisture better than synthetic covers. The certification list is the longest we have seen on a U.S. mattress: GOTS for the finished product, plus OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE, EWG Verified and UL formaldehyde-free.

The weak spot is the return policy. The trial lasts a full year, but sending the mattress back costs a $99 fee plus the original shipping, so it is not a free trial. Prices sit above most foam and hybrid mattresses even with the near-permanent sale, and the warranty runs 25 years, of which only the first 10 are non-prorated.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the Avocado Green to back and combination sleepers who want certified organic materials and a supportive, breathable hybrid. Pick the Medium for most bodies and the pillow-top if you sleep on your side. Budget for the $99 return fee before you order.”
