The Original is the 10-inch (25 cm) all-foam mattress Lucid built its name on, and the brand still flags it as its best seller. It comes in three feels; this review covers the medium version, which Lucid recommends for people who sleep in more than one position and for guest rooms.

In the medium build, a 3-inch layer of memory foam infused with gel and bamboo charcoal sits on 1.5 inches of transition foam and a 5.5-inch base. The plush version puts more transition foam under a thinner top; the firm one adds base foam. We rate the medium feel at 5 out of 10: you sink in a little, the foam spreads your weight at the shoulders and hips, and motion transfer is low.

The gel and the ventilated foam are there to keep heat down, but this is still dense memory foam without coils underneath, so hot sleepers may find it warm. The cover is not removable, so use a protector.

The price is the reason to buy it. A Queen in medium costs $299.99 on lucidmattress.com, with free shipping, a 100-night trial after a 30-night break-in and a 10-year warranty.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“For a guest room, a teenager or a first apartment, The Original gives you a comfortable, pressure-relieving foam bed for very little money. Pick the firm version if you sleep on your stomach, and skip it altogether if you need the support of springs.”
