The PurpleFlex is the entry point to Purple’s range and, at 8 inches (20 cm), its thinnest bed. It has two layers only: 2 inches of GelFlex Grid with a moisture-wicking treatment, laid directly on 6 inches of polyurethane base foam. There is no comfort foam in between, and that is what separates it from The Purple Mattress.

Without that middle layer the grid rests on a stiff base, and the feel is firm. We place it at 7 on our 1 to 10 scale. Stomach and back sleepers get a flat, stable surface that keeps the hips from sagging, while the grid still eases the pressure at the shoulder. Most side sleepers will want more give than this.

The open grid lets air move, so the bed does not hold heat the way a slab of memory foam does. It is also light: a Queen weighs about 77 lb, so one person can set it up.

Purple sells the PurpleFlex online only, so you cannot lie on it in a showroom first; the 100-night trial covers that risk. A Queen lists at $1,299, and there is no California king.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The PurpleFlex is the Purple we would recommend to stomach and back sleepers on a tight budget who like a firm bed. Side sleepers and heavier sleepers should spend the extra on The Purple Mattress or the Restore Hybrid.”
