Lullaby Earth Breathe Safe Breathable Crib Mattress reviewed

The Breathe Safe is Lullaby Earth’s best-known crib mattress and the brand’s answer to parents who want breathability without the price of an organic model. Our test checked its construction claims, safety positioning, size and price. It is a full-size crib mattress of 27.25 by 51.625 inches, 6 inches thick, with a firm side for infants and a cushion-firm side for toddlers.

The breathable part is a removable, three-dimensional fabric cover and pad that lets air move around the mattress and goes in the washing machine. Lullaby Earth says an independent lab, Intertek, placed its breathability in the highest-performing category. Under the cover the surface is waterproof and food-grade, the edges are reinforced, and the mattress avoids vinyl, PVC, polyurethane foam, phthalates and chemical flame retardants. It is EWG VERIFIED.

For a newborn, use the firm side, a fitted sheet and nothing else. The CPSC’s guidance is “bare is best”: no pillows, blankets or bumpers, and baby always on their back. Lullaby Earth says its crib mattresses follow the CPSC recommendation for a firm, flat surface.

What you do not get is organic material. Lullaby Earth is owned by Naturepedic, but this line uses synthetic materials to hit its price, and the product page does not name the core material or where it is made. If organic cotton matters to you, Naturepedic’s Breathable Ultra is the step up.
