Kolcraft Pediatric 800 Crib Mattress reviewed

The Pediatric 800 is Kolcraft’s best-known crib mattress and the one most searched by model name. It is built around an extra-firm steel innerspring of 80 coils with hypoallergenic cushioning, measures 51.63 by 27.25 by 5 inches and weighs 11 pounds.

The cover is Kolcraft’s PermaDri vinyl: fully waterproof, reinforced against tears and wiped clean with a damp cloth. An airflow pocket lets the mattress breathe as it is compressed. Kolcraft states it is GREENGUARD Gold certified, free of antimony, formaldehyde, lead, phthalates and flame retardants, passes the voluntary ASTM crib mattress standards and is made in the USA.

Kolcraft calls it extra firm, and we rate it 9 out of 10, firmer than most foam crib mattresses. That is the right direction for an infant, but a waterproof vinyl surface does not breathe, so temperature is the low score in our test.

Kolcraft lists it at , with a 7-year warranty on workmanship and materials, which is long for this price. It sells mostly at Walmart. Check that the mattress meets the crib sides without a gap and, as the American Academy of Pediatrics advises, add only a fitted sheet.
