Series One is the least expensive way into the Beautyrest Black collection. It uses the same Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil unit as the more expensive Series, so the support and motion separation are not watered down. The comfort layers are simpler: Beautyrest gel memory foam and AirCool HD foam, with no latex and no micro coils.

Six feels are on offer, from extra firm through medium and plush, each also as a pillow top except extra firm. We describe the extra firm model, which sits around 9 out of 10 and suits back and stomach sleepers. Pillow top versions stand up to about 14.75 in (37 cm) tall and give side sleepers the cushioning they need at the shoulder.

The cool-to-the-touch cover helps when you first lie down, but the gel foam layer still holds some heat compared with a latex top. If you sleep hot, Series Two or Three bring more cooling components.

A Queen costs $2,199 direct from Beautyrest, with pillow tops a few hundred dollars more. That still beats the higher Series by a wide margin, and you keep White Glove delivery and the 100-night trial.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Series One gives you the Black coil system for much less than Series Three. Choose it if support matters more to you than the extra latex and cooling layers, and pick a pillow top if you sleep on your side.”
