The Beautyrest Black Series Three is the third step of Beautyrest’s luxury collection. It keeps the Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil unit and cooling cover of Series One and Two, then adds a layer of Self-Response latex for a more responsive, less sinking feel. In the pillow top versions, 2K micro coils sit inside the comfort layers for extra contouring.

You choose between six feels: extra firm, firm and medium with a flat quilted top, plus firm, medium and plush pillow tops. The extra firm version we describe here rates about 9 on a 10-point scale and is what Beautyrest recommends for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers should look at the medium or plush pillow top instead, which reach up to 16.75 in (43 cm) tall.

Cooling comes from the cover and from memory foam infused with diamond particles, which Beautyrest says move heat away from the body. Gel memory foam is quilted straight into the surface, so the pressure relief starts at the top layer rather than under a thick batting.

The catch is price. A Queen costs $3,999 on beautyrest.com, more than many hybrids with similar materials, and Black models are heavy to move. White Glove delivery, old mattress removal and a 100-night trial are included, which takes some risk out of the purchase.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Series Three is the Black model we would pick if you want latex responsiveness without paying for Series Four. It earns its price for back and stomach sleepers who keep a mattress for a decade, less so for anyone on a budget.”
