Naturepedic Breathable Ultra Organic 2-Stage Crib Mattress reviewed

The Breathable Ultra is the crib mattress we would start with in Naturepedic’s baby range. Our test covered its construction, safety claims, certifications and price. It is a standard full-size crib mattress, 27.25 by 51.625 inches and 6 inches thick, with a firm infant side and a slightly softer toddler side that Naturepedic suggests using from about one year.

Inside is an organic cotton surface made waterproof with a coating from non-GMO sugarcane, a PLA firmness layer, Texas-grown organic cotton batting and a steel innerspring. A lightweight version with a polyethylene WaveSupport core instead of springs is sold at the same price, at 14 lb instead of 19 lb, which makes changing sheets easier. On top sits a quilted, removable pad of organic cotton and polyester lattice that lets air pass through and goes in the washing machine.

Safe infant sleep starts with a firm, flat mattress that fits the crib without gaps and nothing else in it. The CPSC’s rule for the crib is “bare is best”: a fitted sheet only, no pillows, blankets or bumpers, and baby on their back. The Breathable Ultra fits that brief, and Naturepedic says both sides meet crib firmness guidelines. Do not add a topper or extra padding.

The list of marks is long: GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, PETA-Approved Vegan, UL Non-Detectable PFAS and UL Formaldehyde Free. The drawback is price: it costs well over what Naturepedic’s own Lullaby Earth line asks for a breathable crib mattress.
